WELCOME TO OUR E-NEWSLETTER

Information is included about the library's November programs with online registration when applicable. If you no longer wish to receive this eNewsletter, please email Sally Schuster (schuster@addisonlibrary.org).

For the Thanksgiving holiday,
the library will close at 5 pm on Wednesday, November 23,
and all day on Thursday, November 24.

PRINT NEWSLETTER IS HERENewsletter

If you live in Addison and have not received your library newsletter yet, you should be getting it shortly. Issues will be delivered via U.S. Mail every other month (January, March, May, July, September, and November). It is also available online. Extra copies are available at the public service desks.

The print newsletter replaces Hands on Fun, which had information about the Children's Department, and the teen and adult program brochure. The eNewsletter continues to be a monthly publication. However, you may see some changes in it as well.

THGiving TreeE BOOK GIFT TREE

November 1-November 30
The Children’s Library has a Book Gift Tree near our story time rooms. Choose a leaf with the age of a child; bring a new book and the leaf to the Children’s Library by November 30.

The books we collect will be given to the Addison Community Switchboard for its Christmas drive. Beginning December 1, we will add snowflakes with the donors’ names to our giving tree.

NATIONAL CHILD SAFETY DAY

To help keep children safe, the National Child Safety Council was founded on November 9, 1955. To recognize the important mission of this organization, bring your child to the library on November 9 and receive a special gift.

Remember, any public place may be dangerous for a child who is left unattended even for a brief period of time. The library would like to help you keep your child safe by providing safe child resources and tips on child safety. To keep your child safe in the library, please remember:

  • Supervision: Children under 10 years of age must be directly supervised by a parent or caregiver aged 16 years or older at all times while in the library.
  • Emergencies: Make sure that unattended children (10 years and up) know the phone number to call in an emergency and have at least 50 cents to use the pay phone.
  • Picking up Children: Unattended children (10 years and up) must be picked up before the library is scheduled library to close. If children are not picked up by closing, staff will accompany them to the Addison Police Department to wait for a parent.
  • Safety Drills: From time to time, we might have child safety drills (like fire drills) in the library to assure the safety of all children who use our facility.

NATIONAL GAMING DAY @ YOUR LIBRARY

GIFT TAG PROJECT

November 28-December 11
This holiday season, the Addison Library will have a Christmas tree in our lobby with gift tags for needy children. Anyone who would like to participate may choose a gift tag from the tree with the child’s age, sex, and size. Return the tag with a new gift for that child to the library. The deadline for returning gifts is December 11. The Addison Community Switchboard will distribute these gifts to children in Addison who, without the gifts, might not receive anything this holiday season.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

Mark your calendars today for the library's annual Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 4, at 2 pm.
Piano and flute
The afternoon begins with The Magical Sounds of the Holiday Season. Carlyn Lloyd, flute, and Emanuele Andrizzi, piano, will play holiday music. Sing along to well-known and loved Christmas carols. Listen to music from The Nutcracker, Chanukah Suzette, the balloon artistsongs, and more. This concert is perfect for the whole family.

After watching Lloyd and Andrizzi, Suzette, the Balloon Artist, will make balloon creations—including candy canes, reindeer, and snowmen—for you to take home.

The Friends of the Addison Public Library will provide and serve refreshments.

BOOK SALE

Sunday, December 4, 2-4 pm
On the same day as the Holiday Open House, the Friends of the Addison Public Library are having a paperback and children’s book sale. Books are 25¢ each or 5 for $1.

The group also sponsors the Continuous Book Sale in the Café area and are pleased to receive donations of books, music, and movies. Bring donations to the Friends’ book bin by the Continuous Book Sale shelves. Large donations should be left at the Ask Here Desk in the Children’s Library. Magazines, Reader’s Digest books, encyclopedias, textbooks, cassettes, or videotapes are not accepted for the Continuous Book Sale.

The money the Friends raise is used to enhance the library's resources and to support services that are not within the library's budget. To learn more or to join the Friends, click here.

By the middle of the war, she had a wide variety of accomplices in her spy ring who helped supply General Benjamin Butler and General Ulysses S. Grant with tactical and strategic information.
