GUADALAJARA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR

Last year for the first time a library staff member was able to attend the Guadalajara Spanish BookInternational Book Fair, the most important exhibit of Spanish-language books in the world. Mary Ann Scherer, who works in the area of Spanish language acquisitions, attended this important fair through the American Library Association's FREE PASS program.

Mary Ann spent over $6,000 in Per Capita grant funds to purchase Spanish language materials for our collection by attending this event. She had access to the latest publications in Spanish, experienced networking opportunities with 15,000 book professionals, enjoyed literary programming with Latin American authors, and attended lectures on Mexican culture delivered by experts in the field.

The materials purchased at the Guadalajara International Book Fair include:
• Popular young adult titles like the Hunger Games trilogy and books from the Blue Bloods series
• Books by popular authors like Stieg Larsson, Jean M. Auel, Dr. Phil, and Ricky Martin
• Nonfiction titles on a variety of subjects like decorating, health, and family
• Picture books for children
• Fiction for children like the Geronimo Stilton series
• Nonfiction for children on topics like Mexican art, history, and culture
• DVDs that will interest children, adults, and families

Upcoming displays will feature many of these materials.

LUTHERBOOK STUDENTS PROVIDE ART

Lutherbrook Art 2010
Lutherbrook Art 2010

Each month the art wall on the second floor across from the elevator features the works of a different local artist. In March, for the second year, the library is proud to display art from Lutherbrook students. Each of the works on display was done in Art Therapy class.

Lutherbrook provides expressive arts therapies by specially trained art therapists. Expressive art therapy helps children express and deal with their feelings and experiences. Lutherbrook artists have received prizes for their artwork from organizations including the Child Care Association of Illinois and the Child Welfare League of America.
