Congratulations to each of you, and thank you for all you do for the Addison Public Library.

50th ANNIVERSARY YEAR IS HERE!

On October 15, 1962, the Addison Public Library officially opened for the first time.50th Anniversary Logo Throughout 2012 we are planning a number of activities to celebrate our first 50 years of serving Addison’s residents. On Sunday, January 22, at 2 pm, the first program, “1960s Broadway Musicals,” will be presented. Hosted by the Friends of the Addison Public Library, pianist Eugene Kwok will play a number of songs that will bring back memories of this bygone era.

Among the activities planned is the development of a time line which follows the history of the library and Addison. Bring photos of yourselves, the library, and Addison to any of the public service desks. Staff will scan the photos and return them to you. The images will be displayed in the lobby; in January the years 1962 through 1967 will be featured. At the grand celebration in October 2012, the 10 displays will highlight the first 50 years the Addison Public Library has been servings it residents.

Additional programs and activities will be announced throughout 2012.

RFID IS COMING SOON

In early 2012 the library will be moving to a system of tracking materials called Radio Frequency Identification or RFID. RFID is a fast, efficient way to track, locate, and manage library resources. RFID technology is used in many places such as airports, hospitals, and retail stores; it is also the technology behind the State Tollway I-Pass system.

RFID at the library means that most items will be automatically checked in when they are dropped through the return slots inside the library, allowing library staff to be redirected to more customer-focused services. Once checked in, items will be sorted into bins by type and location getting materials back on the shelves much faster. A new portable device will help us track inventory of various collections, locate lost and missing items, and ensure that everything is in proper order on the shelves.

In preparation for the switch to RFID, you’ll soon see changes being made in the Circulation area of the library. The place for returning materials will be temporarily relocated while the return slots in the wall are modified to accommodate the new system. In addition, we’ll be installing new security gates and our self-check machines will be upgraded. We’re very excited about these changes that will improve our service.

Please bear with us as we transition to the new RFID system.
