WELCOME TO OUR E-NEWSLETTER
We have included a schedule of special programs planned from May 15 through July 15. Details about the programs can be found on our Website.

May 23 is the last Sunday the Library is open until September 12.

The Library will be closed Monday, May 31, for Memorial Day.

On Friday, June 4, Summer Hours begin, and the Library will be open from 9 am to 5 pm. This schedule lasts through Labor Day.

The Library will be closed Monday, July 5, for Independence Day.

FREE ASTHMA SCREENING
Asthma Screening
On Saturday, May 15, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, the Library will host an asthma screening for all ages. This is part of a nationwide asthma screening program supported by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology to help community members identify breathing problems, to raise awareness of the seriousness of asthma, and to let the public know how allergists can help them find relief from their symptoms.
Dr. Eugenia Hahn will provide flyers, questionnaires, and brochures about recognizing asthma symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. In addition, there is an opportunity for people to assess their lungs through a simple blowing test with a peak flow meter.

SCARE UP A GOOD BOOK! Summer Reading Logo

Summer Reading Is Coming June 5

Registration begins Saturday, June 5, at 9 am, for Scare Up a Good Book!, this year's Summer Reading Program. There is a program for everyone who has an Addison Public Library card. All of the summer reading programs end July 31. Children from birth through entering grade 5 in the fall sign up in the Children’s Department. Teens entering grades 6 through 12 in the fall register at the Teen Desk. Those 18 years of age and older join at the Adult Services Desk. This is your chance to read for fun and prizes.

CHILDREN'S SERVICES CHANGES DROP-IN PROGRAMS
Drop-in programs do not require registration and are very popular. To make certain Addison residents can attend, certain procedural changes are taking place. Fifteen minutes before a program begins, participants get an entry pass to attend the program. The passes are distributed at the Ask Here Desk. Space is limited, and an Addison Public Library card is required.

VOLUNTEEN APPLICATIONS
If you are a student in Grades 6 through 11 and you want to join the Volunteens, applications are due Saturday, May 15.

Teens can earn community service or volunteer hours. Volunteens help with Summer Reading and other programs during the year. To be eligible, a teen must have his or her own valid Addison Public Library card and attend one of the orientation sessions: Saturday, May 22, 2-3 pm, OR Wednesday, May 26, 7-8 pm.

NEW DATABASES...COMING IN JUNE, 2010

Computer keyboardAdult Services staff selected a number of new databases which have a broad range of full text and bibliographic materials. These will replace some the library currently offers. They can be searched from home or at the library. These new databases include:
  • Master File Primer with 1,700 full-text periodicals, 500 full-text reference books, and over 500,000 photos, maps, and flags
  • Auto Repair Reference Center, which is comparable to Chilton's
  • Literary Resource Center, which is comparable to Literature Resource Center
  • Novelist Select, which offers suggestions and recommendations from more than 5 million titles for readers of all ages and interests
  • Next Reads with patron-initiated email subscriptions to 22 fiction or nonfiction newsletters.
For more information, stop by the Adult Services Desk.

SPOTLIGHT ON ADDISON
Because of budgeting constraints, the Back-to-School issue (August/September) of Spotlight on Addison will be the last. The Library’s Board of Trustees and staff are discussing the best avenue of getting information to you. Encourage your friends and neighbor to sign up for this eNewsletter, which is emailed to you. They can sign up on the front page of our Website.
