EXPANDED HOURS
With the new school year the library expands its hours. Beginning Friday, September 10, the library will be open from 9 am until 6 pm. Sunday hours resume September 12, so the library will be open from 1 to 5 pm. These hours will be in effect until next summer.
FRIDA KAHLO EXHIBIT From Friday, September 10, through Friday, September 24, the library will host a Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit featuring the incredible paintings of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Kahlo was married to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera but won acclaim for her own paintings, including many self-portraits. The beautiful reproductions, including life size photos, will be located in the library’s meeting room on the main floor. The exhibit celebrates fine art, women in art, and Mexican culture!
In addition to the exhibit, see the movie Frida on September 9 at 2 or 6:30 pm. On September 16 at 7 pm, art historian Michelle Mishur presents "The Art and Life of Frida Kahlo."
BRING YOUR OWN BAG FOR MATERIALS
For budget and environmental reasons, plastic bags will no longer be provided when the current supply runs out. However, reusable bags can be purchased at the Circulation Desk for $1.50. Or, you can bring your own bag.
Beginning September 1, everyone who brings their own bag or purchases a new bag at the Circulation Desk will receive an entry into a special drawing. At the end of each month, one winner will be drawn. The prize is a $30 gift certificate for an Addison business. You may only enter once a day. This incentive will continue for 12 months.
THE CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT IS ON THE WEB
Blog
Their blog is the newest addition to the Web and offers you current information about what is happening in the Children's Department.
New Library Videos on YouTube
Staff from the library's Children's Department have developed 7 videos that you can watch on YouTube.
- Children’s Library Tour* The Addison Public Library opened its new building July 2008. This tour highlights the Children's Library. The dream about a new library became a reality on July 21, 2008, when the new building opened to the public for the first time. Thanks to the Village of Addison, which provide $13,000,000 in funding to build the 54,600 square foot building, the library has a magnificent new home. The money from the Village did not come from property taxes but from a .25% sales tax that has been in place for many years. The new building was designed by the architectural firm of Burnidge Cassell & Associates, Inc. The lead architect was Rick McCarthy. M. A. Mortenson oversaw the construction of the building. Neil Wisker was the project manager. The art work "Grand Openings" was created by Gregory Gove.
- Children’s Drop-in Events* The library offers many drop-in events for children from birth through 5th grade, including drop-in crafts, Wii, board games, Legos, and an early literacy play area.
- En Español* Programas en espanol para Ninos.
- Family Entertainment* The library offers many programs on a variety of themes for children and their parents or adult caregivers.
- Professional Performers* The library offers many programs presented by professional performers for families. Programs include science, theater, music, animals, puppets, etc.
- Programs for School-Age Children* The children's staff develop many programs throughout the year for school age children. Programs include "Ready Readers" (grades 1-2), "Crazy for Chapters" (grades 3-5), "Young Monets" (grades 1-5), and a variety of programs on special topics.
- Story Times* There are two different story times. "Begin with Books" is designed for children under three with an adult and emphasizes early literacy skills through the use of stories, rhymes, and music. "Preschool Stories" is designed for 3-5 year-old-children and emphasizes having fun while developing early reading readiness through books, rhymes, music, and games.

MACY'S MUSEUM ADVENTURE PASS PROGRAM
Free passes to many area museums and cultural institutions continue to be available. Take advantage of this program through August 2011.
This special opportunity is made possible by a generous contribution from Macy’s, in partnership with the DuPage Library System.
You need to visit the Library to pick up a one-time-use pass for the museum of your choice. Each pass expires one week after it is issued. Participating museums are contributing a limited number of passes, each good for two or four free admissions or a gift-shop discount when admission is already free. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
To take part in these learning adventures you must be an adult with a valid Addison Public Library card. One Museum Adventure Pass may be checked out per household per loan period.
