YOU WILL BE WOWED BY AMERICAN ARTIST MARY STEVENSON CASSATT!

The library is hosting a Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit featuring the fascinating paintings of American artist Mary Cassatt. Giant reproductions will be on display in the library's meeting room from Friday, January 27, through Sunday, February 13. The exhibit celebrates Cassatt, the only American painter to exhibit with the French Impressionists!

Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 to a wealthy family living in Allegheny City, which today is part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At just 17 years of age, Cassatt enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She went to Paris in the mid 1860s to continue her studies.

Throughout her life, the artist continued to live and work in Paris. Cassatt became known for her subject matter of women and children engaged in familiar activities. In addition to painting, the artist worked in pastel and printmaking during her career. In 1914, failing eyesight caused her to stop painting. Mary Cassatt died in 1926 in France.

Several activities are planned to coordinate with the exhibit.

  • Children in grades 1-5 who attend the January 26 session of Young Monets will learn about Cassatt and spend some time viewing the exhibit. Registration for this program begins January 15.
  • On January 31, art historian Jeff Mishur will present a program, Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist in Paris, about the art and life of Cassatt. He will show images of her works to enhance his presentation. To register online for this program, click here.
  • On February 10, actress Lynn Rymarz will become Mary Cassatt and follow her life's jouney from childhood to becoming the artist she always wanted to be. This program, Meet Mary Cassatt: An American Artist, is cosponsored by the Addison Art Guild. To register online for this program, click here.
  • Books about Mary Cassatt will be placed in the meeting room for you to enjoy and check out.
Hopefully, you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn more about this great American artist.

Hold onto Your House: Senior Financing Seminar
Mortgage consultant Dennis Baier presents a seminar to help seniors review their financial options. The first decision is housing: Should they move to a senior community; do they need some kind of assisted living; is home the best place? How do they pay for their choice? One of the major financial resources available to seniors is the equity in their homes. What is the best way to tap that equity: home equity loans or reverse mortgages? How does each work? Which offers the most benefits? Dennis will also discuss leaving your home to your heirs.

Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist in Paris
Mary Cassatt worked as an artist in an age when most women of her station were restricted to the home. She recognized a market opportunity for images of motherhood and depicted ordinary mothers and kids in striking compositions. Cassatt painted important images of modern women, contributed to the Women’s Pavilion at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, and worked with Louise Havemeyer in New York City to present a show of her work to raise funds for the suffrage movement.

Art historian Jeff Mishur will discuss the life and art of Cassatt. He will share examples of her works.
