Reading Is So Delicious
June 2-July 28 |
SUMMER READING: Reading Is So Delicious!
Saturday, June 2, through Saturday, July 28
There are programs for children (birth – 5th grade), tweens and teens (6th – 12th grades), and adults (18 years +). The theme for children, teens, and adults is “Reading Is So Delicious!”
Each program has different requirements, but each has wonderful prices that can be earned or won just for reading books. When you come in to register, you will learn the rules.
The Children's Department has several reading contest this summer. Where's Addi and the Summer Reading Guessing Game are just for young readers, but the Delicious Book Cake Contest is for everyone who loves to bake and has a favorite book.
Where’s Addi this summer?
Each day during Summer Reading (June 2-July 28), we will be hiding a book with Addi’s picture on it. The clue for where she’s hiding will be at the Ask Here Desk. Children ages 3-10 can search for Addi each day, and the first person to find the Addi book that day will receive a prize.
Summer Reading Guessing Game:
Most children stop at our desk each visit to guess how many candies are in our guessing jar. This summer, we will have an additional guessing game. During Summer Reading, children will put one item in the jar for each 1 hour that they read in our summer reading program. In August, the jar will be available for guesses, and the child who guesses most correctly how many hours were read during the summer will win a prize.
Delicious Book Cake Contest
June 4 is almost here. What amazing cake have you planned for this contest?
Bake: Create a decorated cake based on a favorite book. One winning cake will be chosen from each of the following categories: family, children and teens, and adults.
Deliver: On Monday, June 4, between 9 am-9 pm, bring your cake to the library and fill out an entry form. A staff member will take a photo of each cake; then, you take the cake home to enjoy. Vote: Photos of all the delicious book cakes will be displayed in the library from June 5 through 30. During these dates, the public can vote for their favorite cake.
Prize: The winner in each category receives a $25 gift certificate for a local restaurant.
SUMMER READING SUPPORTERS
The library is able to give prizes for Summer Reading because many area businesses and organizations give us donations. The following list includes the names of all who have given at the time of sending this eNewsletter out. They are listed in alphabetical order.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
NEW ELECTRONIC LENDING SERVICES
The library's has new eBook and eAudiobook vendors. Staff members are ready to answer your questions, and they are trained to show you how to download both eBooks and eAudiobooks. If you need help, set up an appointment for downloading instruction (630-458-3318). Don't forget to bring your device.
eBooks
Our new eBook lender is 3M Cloud Library eBook Lending Service. This new, free service begins with the latest in technology and gives us the opportunity to continue refining the product. You, the users, are encouraged to offer feedback.
Books check out for a two-week period. Just like print copies, there can only be one user per eBook at a time. For multiple users, the library has to purchase multiple copies.
Books can not be renewed; they may be returned and checked out again if no one is waiting. Since the titles we add belong to the Addison Public Library alone, those on the waiting lists will only be other Addison Public Library card holders.
You can download eBooks to any of the Apple products—iPad, iPhone, iTouch, etc.—to Android devices—Samsung Galaxy, Droid phones etc.—to Nook, Sony Readers, and Kindle Fire. Unfortunately, these eBooks cannot be downloaded to Kindles. However, 3M is working with Amazon to change this situation. We will let you know as soon as 3M and Amazon resolve this issue.
Downloadable Audiobooks
Our new vendor for downloadable audiobooks is Recorded Books. You can select from many fiction and nonfiction titles for youth and adult listeners.
Books check out for three-week period. Recorded Books allows for unlimited simultaneous users. Books can be renewed.
All downloads are compatible with iPods and most MP3 players.
AMH PASSES FIRST TEST WITH FLYING COLORS
In past years it typically took the Circulation staff the better part of a w eek to catch up with the backlog of checking in following Memorial Day weekend. This year we had the expected gigantic pile of returned materials in the book drop room. Between closing time on the Saturday before Memorial Day and the library’s re-opening on Tuesday, a lot of people used the drive-up book drop to return items.
Using the new AMH (Automated Materials Handling) system, however, staff had the entire backlog—799 items—checked in and ready to go back to the shelves before 10 am Tuesday morning. With the help of a number of staff members working in Circulation, the AMH system helped us pass the first real “long weekend” test with flying colors.
Children under 10 years of age must be supervised by a parent or approved care giver 16 years of age or older. Unless otherwise specified, programs are for all ages. At programs, children must be accompanied by an adult.
