50th ANNIVERSARY YEAR IS HERE!
Activities celebrating our 50 years began in January. Many of you e njoyed Eugene Kwok's program, 1960s Broadway Musicals. The first time line display highlighted 1962-1967. In February, you will see images from 1967-1972.
We have also created a display in one of the showcases in Adult Services, across from the art wall. Currently the 1960s are featured. If you have any items from the 1970s that will work in this locked, flat display case, we would love to include them. Please have your name and phone number on any items so we can return them when we move on to the 80s.
We are still looking for more photos of Addison and the library. If you have any to share, bring them to any of the public service desks. Staff will scan the photos and return them to you. The March display covers the years 1972-1977.
At the grand celebration in October 2012, the 10 displays will highlight the first 50 years the Addison Public Library has been servings it residents.
Additional programs and activities will be announced throughout 2012.
RFID UPDATE
By the time you read this, the new security gates will be installed and the updates to the self- check machines should be completed, or almost anyway. The new indoor return slots are partially installed and will soon be ready for the new systems that go on the other side of the wall.
The sorting system is scheduled for installation at the end of February. It will take a minimum of 5 business days if all goes perfectly—and, when does that happen? To cut down on the number of returned items, no materials will be due during the time period set for that work. We REALLY encourage you to keep library materials while this installation is happening. With the circulation workroom closed to staff, we have to find a new place to safely store any materials that are returned until they get checked in and back on the shelves.
RFID at the library means that most items will be automatically checked in when they are dropped through the return slots inside the library. Once checked in, items will be sorted into bins by type and location. Materials will be back on the shelves much faster. A new portable device will help us track inventory of various collections, locate lost and missing items, and ensure that everything is in proper order on the shelves. Library staff will be redirected to more customer-focused services.
We’re very excited about these changes that will improve our service. Once the system is up and running, you will see how quickly items are checked in!
Please bear with us as we transition to the new RFID system.
WINTER READING PROGRAMS
Snowflake Reading
through February 14
Snowflake Reading is new this year. After children read or listen to one book, they come to the Ask Here Desk and tell us the title. The Children’s staff place the children’s names on snowflake clings and add them to our windows for all to see. Participating children receive a snowflake cling to take home and put on their window. One snowflake per child.
