National Awards

The following awards are given annually by the American Library Association.
The Caldecott Award The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
The Newbery AwardThe Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
The Mildred Batchelder Award The Mildred Bachelder Award is awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States
The Laura Ingalls Wilder MedalThe award honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.
The Robert F. Sibert Medal The Sibert Informational Book Award is given annually to the author of the most distinguished informational book published during the preceding year.
Theodor Seuss Geisel Award This annual award is given to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished contribution to the body of American children’s literature known as beginning reader books.
The Andrew Carnegie Medal The medal is given to honor outstanding video productions for children released during the previous year.

Illinois Awards

The Rebecca Caudill Award
Students in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools give this annual Illinois award to the author of the book voted most outstanding. It is sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council, Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois Association of Teachers of English.
The Monarch Award
Students in Kindergarten through grade three vote on the author of the most outstanding book. It is sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council, Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois Association of Teachers of English.

The Bluestem Award
Students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles.  Named in honor of Big Bluestem, which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill list.
