WELCOME TO OUR E-NEWSLETTER
We have included a schedule of special programs planned from January 15 through March 15. Details about the programs can be found on our Web site.
NEW WEB SITE
Have you checked out our Web site yet? We hope you like our new look and find the site easy to use. We welcome comments and suggestions about the site.
WORK ON CAFÉ TO BEGIN SOON
Work on the café will begin on Monday January 19th. Mortenson Construction Company will construct temporary partitions around the area. The material return slots and the Friends’ sale shelves should be open throughout this project, but the seating in the café area may not be available.
There will also be a very brief period— perhaps a day or two—when the payphone and paperback exchange are not available. Cutting of the concrete, which will take place the first week, will be the noisiest part of the job. Mortenson will do everything they can to minimize the impact of this work on library operations.
If all goes well and we pass our inspections smoothly and according to schedule, the café will be ready to open early in March.
NAME THE CAFÉ CONTEST
Do you have a great name for the new café? If you do, it just may be the winner! George Spentzos, operator of the café, is sponsoring a naming contest for his new business. Stop by the Circulation Desk and complete a contest entry form. The official rules are:
- The contest is limited to Addison Public Library card holders.
- Entries are limited to one per person.
- Entries must be submitted between January 15 and February 7, 2009. No entries will be accepted after February 7, 2009.
- All submissions must be in English.
- All entries become the property of George Spentzos, operator of the café, and will not be returned.
- All entries submitted must be original, must not have been previously published, released or distributed, and must have been created and owned exclusively by the entrant submitting the creation. George Spentzos is under no obligation to use the winning entry for any purpose.
- Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: applicability, appropriateness, creativity, and uniqueness.
- George Spentzos will select the winning café name. The Library will have final approval of that name. Mr. Spentzos will not be given the names of the entrants prior to the final selection and approval.
- In the event that multiple entries of the same name are received and that name is picked as the winner, the final winner will be selected by random drawing.
- The only prize is a $5 gift certificate each week for one year to be used at the café.
Entrants grant to George Spentzos and the Addison Public Library the right to use and publish their name in connection with the Contest.
NEW ARTWORK AT THE LIBRARY
Take a moment or two the next time you are in the library to enjoy the works of local artist Richard Miller, a member of the Addison Art Guild. The wall across from the elevator on the second floor was designed to display art work. Each month a different artist will be featured.
Richard Miller is our first artist. His works will be on display through the month of February. Richard's paintings have received regional awards. According to the artist, "Richard's work is an expression of an art between simple representation and pure abstraction. The artist is guided by a purpose to convey the essence of the subject while eliminating much of the detail."
If you are interested in displaying your artwork at the Addison Public Library, please contact Sally Schuster, 630-458-3303. She will explain the library's policy for displaying artwork and arrange a date for you.
READING WINTERLAND:
Adult Winter Reading Program
Saturday, January 17 through February 28
The Library is offering a Winter Reading Program for adults. Anyone 18 years of age or older may join. There are two ways to participate: read a total of four books or 15 hours. You choose books or hours when you register at the Adult Services Desk. If you select to record the hours you read, you can count the time you read to yourself and the time you read aloud to others.
The first 75 who complete the program will receive an Addison Library mug; everyone who finishes will be entered into a special drawing with lots of great prizes. You can earn an entry in an additional prize drawing by reading four more books or 15 hours. All entries must be received by February 28 at 5 pm.
BOARD OF TRUSTEE ELECTION
There is still time to run for one of the two six-year terms that are open for election in April 2009. Petitions for the Library Board of Trustee positions must be filed between January 19 and 26. For information and packets, contact Village Clerk, Lucille Zucchero, 630.543.4100.
PLAYAWAYS ARE HERE
The Addison Library has audio books in a new format: Playaways. Playaways are easy-to-use, pre-loaded digital audio players. Each contains one complete audio book. Lightweight and small, they can easily fit into a pocket allowing you to carry them around with ease. Simply press a button and begin listening to your audio book. Bookmarking capability lets you mark where you stopped so you can easily find your place again. The only thing you need to supply is a AAA battery and your own headphones.
The following adult titles are currently available: Bad Dogs Have More Fun, The Closers, In the Company of the Courtesan, Busting Vegas, The Secret Life of Bees, The Book of the Dead, Water For Elephants, and Open House. We also have three complete language courses: German. Italian, and Spanish. More titles will be coming soon.
There are also 35 children's titles available. This collection will continue to have titles added.
Many of both the adult and children's Playaways are already in use. Check one out and see what everyone’s talking about. For more information, call the Adult Information Desk at 630-458-3320 or the Ask Here Desk, 630-458-3338.
