Q: Is library use up at the Addison Public Library?
A: Addison checked out more items in January than it had ever checked out in one month. In fact, library use nationwide continues to rise: Public library visits exceed 1.3 billion, and libraries circulate more items than Fed Ex ships – more than 2.1 billion books, CDs, DVDs and more.

Q: Can I calculate how much money I save when I use my library card?
A: You can. Under the About Us section, Library Statistics has a link to a calculator. Follow the link and enter the materials you have checked out or used while at the library. You may be surprised by how much you have saved.

Q: Will my Addison Library card allow me to check out books, movies, music, and other materials from other libraries?
A: Your Addison Library card will work at most other Illinois public libraries. Your card must be "in good standing," which means not expired and no fines. Some libraries will only allow their own patrons to check out new items, so be sure to call ahead before you travel to another library.

Q: What book disucssions are available at the Addison Public Library?
A: We have two discussions. A general book discussion group, called The Book Bunch, meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. We also have a "brown bag it" mysery/suspense group that meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 12:30. Bring your lunch and enjoy some mysteries! (For book groups or discussions for younger people, check out the Teen page or the Children's page.)

Reader's Advisory
Q: I'm tired of reading the same authors. How do I get suggestions for other authors or books I might like?
A: Come to the second floor Information desk and fill out a Personal Reading List form. Or you may go to the Personal Reading list category on this site and electronically submit the form. You'll receive many new reading suggestions. A valid Addison Public Library card is required for this service and is limited to Adult and teen reading levels.

Q: I've noticed that the library has two main categories for crime fiction: mystery and suspense. What is the difference between them?
A: For a book to be classified as a mystery, there must be a murder. Mysteries can be likened to a puzzle where the reader does not know the killer before the crime is solved at the end of the book. Suspense novels may also involve a murder but might also involve other types of crime without a murder: kidnapping, bank robbery, terrorism, legal thrillers, etc. The reader may know who the criminal is ahead of time, often seeing the crimes through their eyes.

Q: What is the difference between fantasy and science fiction novels?
A: Fantasy novels are based on magic and supernatural elements. Science Fiction novels are based on science and technology. Space travel, life on other planets, future environmental disasters/changes and future scientific discoveries all fall into this genre.

Q: What do the heart stickers mean on the romance books?
A: To make finding a book you like easier, we put stickers on some books. The hearts on romance books show a "C" for Contemporary, "SUS" for Romantic Suspense, "FANT" for romantic fantasies. "H" is for historical romances, and "REG" indicates a Regency romance.
