What is the 500 Book Challenge?
The 500 Book Challenge is a reading challenge for kindergartners through 5th graders. You read what you like, when you like—no deadlines! The challenge ends when you start 6th grade.
How do I track my books?
Use your reading log to color in one book for every book (or 100 pages) you read. Turn in your log when it’s full and get a new one.
Are there prizes?
Yes! You’ll get a small prize for every 50 books you finish. Complete all 500 and you’ll also get a certificate and a book to keep.
What if I read longer books?
No problem—every 100 pages counts as one book. A 300-page book would count as 3 books!
Do audiobooks count?
Yes! You can count any book you read or listen to. Someone can read to you, you can read to someone else, or you can listen to an audiobook. You can even count books more than once.
Do I have to finish the whole challenge?
The main goal is that you have fun reading, and if you don’t quite make it, that’s ok! Celebrate your progress as you go.
Visit the Children’s Services desk to sign up, pick up your goodies, and get your first log. If you have any questions, we’re happy to help! And Children’s Services staff are always happy to provide recommendations on new books to read.
