Are you wondering what to read and don’t know where to start? We’re always happy to recommend books for you at the library based on your interests and other books and movies you have liked!
The library also offers an online resource called NoveList Plus, which is a database of thousands of books. With NoveList Plus, you can find books that perfectly match your reading preferences and mood.
Here’s how to access NoveList Plus:

On the home page, there are a couple of options for browsing to find your next read.
The “I’m in the mood for...” section displays books that have certain combinations of “appeal factors”, which are characteristics of books that draw you in and help you connect with the story. You may be in the mood for action-packed and fast-paced novels, or you might feel more like reading something atmospheric and creepy.
You can also try the appeal mixer and customize your own combination! In the left sidebar, browse curated lists for various age groups. It includes lists for fans of specific TV shows, musical artists, and other books.
Another option is to use the “Browse By” tab at the top—this will help find books in a certain genre if you already know what kind of book you’d like. For example, explore recently published historical fiction books by scrolling through the carousel of book covers, or click “Explore Historical Fiction” to see more detailed lists organized by historical era. Or browse by other categories, such as award winners.
Once you click on a book, you’ll see a short description, a list of some of its appeal factors (genre, themes, characters, storyline, mood, and tone), and professional reviews.
On the right of the book detail page is a list of “Read-alikes”, selected books that are similar to that title and might be perfect for your next read. NoveList uses actual human librarians provide reasons why you might like one book based on another!
A major highlight of NoveList Plus is the appeal factors, as noted earlier.
For each book title you view, the bottom of the page lists appeal factors under various categories. You can select any number of those to search for a new list of books that include these characteristics that you enjoy.
If you loved The Storm We Made, you might want to read more books that are fast-paced historical fiction set in Malaya, while another reader who loved this title may prefer literary fiction about colonialism with sweeping storylines. Choose any factors you’d like, and you’ll get a list of books to explore.
We recommend searching for some of your favorite books and then choosing the appeal factors you like best from those books to discover your next read. Find the book you choose in the library catalog and check it out in one of many formats—book, eBook, audiobook CD, or eAudiobook.
