Tips to Get Out of a Reading Slump

Let the library get you out of a summer reading slump with these practical tips to enhance your reading goals! Setting reading goals can be a great way to motivate yourself and cultivate a lifelong habit of reading. Whether you aim to read a certain number of books each month or explore different genres, having a goal can keep you engaged and excited about your next read.

Practical tips to help you meet your reading goals:

  • Set up a time to read. Scheduling dedicated time for reading each day can encourage consistency and help you increase the habit.
  • Create a cozy reading space. Set up a reading nook or find a well-lit, comfortable place to sit with a hot or cool drink. This can make reading more inviting.
  • Always carry a book (or an eBook.) Take a book to make the most of downtime on the bus or train, during lunch breaks, or while waiting for an appointment.
  • Carve out time in your busy schedule. Reading can help you decompress after a long day and reduce screen time before bed, which may lead to better rest.

Reading Logs

One strategy to up your reading game is to use a reading log. Ask at the Adult Services desk for a physical log or track your progress with online reading trackers.

  • Goodreads. One of the most well-known and widely used free book trackers and book review systems. Just log in and start reviewing and logging your titles. You can also join a Reading Challenge with an online community that may help you increase your reading journey!  Collect achievements by reading qualifying books along the way.
  • The Storygraph. A Black, woman-owned alternative to Goodreads. It has a free book tracker and book review system.
  • Bookly. Track your reading progress, reach your goals, and maintain an organized catalog of all your read books. It can help you with personalized stats during reading sessions in real-time, keeping you motivated and help improve reading habits.
