Youth Reading Challenges

Our Youth Services department offers seasonal and year-round reading challenges for children from birth through 5th grade. These challenges help kids build reading habits, discover new books, and have fun along the way. You can sign up for our challenges at the Youth Services desk. Come see us in person to register!

Year Long Challenges

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

  • Kids ages birth to right before starting kindergarten can take part in this long-term reading challenge. Families track the books they read together and celebrate milestones along the way!

500 Book Challenge

  • Kids entering kindergarten all the way up to right before 6th grade can continue building their reading habits. Read and log books to work toward the goal of 500.

Seasonal Challenges

In addition to year-round challenges, the library offers seasonal reading programs throughout the year. Most last about a month, while Summer Reading runs all summer long.

Spring

  • The Spring Learning Challenge, which takes place in April, includes a mix of reading and activities. Instead of filling in blank squares, the log features a checklist of challenges such as reading for 20 minutes, introducing yourself to a library staff member, or picking up a craft kit. Complete the challenges on your log and turn it in to receive a small prize!

Summer

  • Summer Reading is our biggest reading challenge of the year. This summer we’re trying something a little different! When you sign up for Summer Reading your log will be included in the bag. Cross off a box for each activity you do, which includes reading, attending library events, completing the Youth Services scavenger hunt, and recommending a book to a library staff member. Special bonus: You’ll get a small prize for completing 10 boxes, and another prize for completing 20! Summer Reading typically starts at the end of May and wraps up when school starts in August.

Fall

  • The Fall Reading Challenge usually begins in September after Labor Day. Kids receive a reading log with 12-16 squares. Fill in a square each time you read for 20 minutes until the challenge wraps up in October!

Winter

  • The Winter Reading Challenge takes place in January and helps keep reading fun during the colder months. Kids receive a log with spaces to fill in, such as reading for a set amount of time, completing the Youth Services scavenger hunt, and trying other winter-themed activities. Watch our website and newsletter for details each winter!
